A great way to get your daily quotas of fruit and vegetables is juicing and drinking the delicious juices produced. Many people are discovering how good they are as part of a healthy fitness regime. A common drink a lot of people make at home is apple juice as there are many different blends that can be made due to the large variety of apples available.
Apple juice is excellent in helping the function of the digestive system and for aiding the function of the kidneys. It is in the digestive tract that its cleansing properties makes apple juice a very popular drink. However, apple juice is also capable of purifying the blood and is very useful as a general tonic for the liver and skin.
There are about 16 calories per ounce of apple and they contain large amounts of vitamins such as thiamine, vitamin B6, carotene and riboflavin. It is a common myth that apples contain high quantities of vitamin C. Although it does contain some of this vitamin it is not found in high concentrations.
The concentrations of vitamin C can vary quite considerably between different types of apple which can contain anywhere between 2 mg per hundred ounces to 35 mg. Varieties that have a lot of this vitamin include Bramley’s, Golden Noble, and Ontario.
Citrus fruits such as lemons and, especially, oranges contain the highest concentrations of vitamin C. Apples, however, contain more antioxidants, like tannic acid, and minerals.
Fresh apple juice has a tendency to oxidize very quickly and can turn an unpleasant brown color. This can be reduced or prevented by putting the juice in the fridge quickly or by applying some fresh lemon juice to the drink. This has the added benefit of giving some extra flavor to the juice.
Many fruit juices like apple juice also contain higher quantities of polyphenols. Research has demonstrated that these chemicals may in fact assist in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Apples also contain important nutrients that act in a similar way to red wine and tea which help in the breakdown of LDL or bad cholesterol therefore helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the phrase that an apple a day keeps the doctor away may in fact be quite true.
As this article shows, not only are apples a tasty, healthy snack, but drinking them as a juice can be an important source of vitamins and nutrients that can help keep you healthy.
